As National Recovery Month highlights the ongoing efforts to combat substance use disorders, SilverSummit Healthplan is proud to partner with the High Risk Pregnancy Center to support the Maternal Opioid Treatment Health Education Recovery (MOTHER) Program. This community-based outpatient initiative addresses the urgent needs of pregnant and postpartum individuals facing Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in Clark and Washoe counties. Together, we’re making a tangible difference in the lives of mothers and their children by offering essential, compassionate care at every stage of the recovery process.
What Is the MOTHER Program?
The opioid epidemic has devastated communities across America for over two decades. Sadly, opioid use during pregnancy is a growing crisis, with drug overdose now the leading cause of death during pregnancy and postpartum. Recognizing the need for specialized care, the High Risk Pregnancy Center launched the MOTHER Program in 2018 to provide life-saving treatment and support for pregnant and postpartum individuals with OUD.
The MOTHER Program is the only one of its kind in Nevada, offering Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) specifically designed for expectant mothers. Patients receive comprehensive care that includes:
- Psychiatry for co-occurring mental health conditions
- Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including Buprenorphine and Naltrexone
- Substance use counseling and ongoing peer recovery support
- Advanced Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) to safeguard both mother and baby
With a team of dedicated MFM specialists and behavioral health professionals, the MOTHER Program provides a unique, collaborative approach to care that addresses both physical and mental health, ensuring the best possible outcomes for mothers and their newborns.
Proven Results for Healthier Mothers and Babies
Since its inception, the MOTHER Program has delivered outstanding results that demonstrate the power of integrated care. Over 90% of patients in the program maintain sobriety from illicit opioids, while their infants benefit from dramatically improved health outcomes:
- 90% of infants did not require medication for neonatal withdrawal syndrome
- 90% of infants were delivered at term, avoiding premature birth
- 100% of patients and infants tested negative for illicit opioids at the time of delivery
- 100% of mothers and infants were able to remain together post-delivery
These outcomes underscore the effectiveness of combining medication-assisted treatment with expert maternal fetal care. Mothers in recovery not only regain control of their lives but also give their babies a healthier start—free from the harmful effects of opioid exposure.
Personalized Care and Peer Support: A Holistic Approach
What sets the MOTHER Program apart is its holistic, patient-centered approach. Each patient receives personalized treatment plans tailored to their individual needs. With continuous support from a collaborative care team—including psychiatrists, behavioral health specialists, and peer recovery advocates—patients can navigate their recovery with the assurance that they are not alone.
One of the key components of the program is peer recovery support, which connects patients with individuals who have personal experience with recovery. Available 24/7, these recovery specialists are there to assist patients through crises, social challenges, and any triggers that could jeopardize their sobriety. This real-time support is critical to helping patients stay on track throughout pregnancy and beyond.
A Partnership for Change
SilverSummit Healthplan’s support for the MOTHER Program reflects our commitment to advancing community health and addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing Nevada’s pregnant population. By providing access to these specialized services, we are empowering women with opioid use disorder to take charge of their health, their recovery, and their future.
